Malö is located about an hour north of Gothenburg. Once there, you’ll find yourself close to several popular excursion destinations, such as Skaftö Island, Viveca Lärn’s “Saltön,” Göksäter—a miniature version of Ullared, the fishing village of Mollösund, Lysekil (home to the marine center Havets Hus), and the Torp shopping center in Uddevalla.

Malö

Malö Camping is located on the same land where Maj and her husband, Konrad, used to cultivate their crops in the past. Their son and his family started the campground in 1984 and ran it until 1992, when it was acquired by the current owners.

Evert Taube

Some islanders claim that Evert Taube never actually met Maj, but only observed her from a distance as she rowed her dinghy from Stätten, the family’s farm on Malö, to the Stätta pier— the steamboat landing below Flink’s general store on Flatön—to buy groceries. Regardless, the song about Maj on Malö has become one of our most beloved folk songs.

Grönvik and Kuststigen

In Grönvik on the western side of Malö, there was once one of the last cod meal factories on the West Coast. Ships would unload and load at the piers below the storage buildings. However, since 1993, much has changed in Grönvik; today it is mostly summer visitors staying there. Apart from the so-called “director’s villa,” a handful of smaller buildings, and a renovated warehouse, the rest of the villas and boathouses are newly built.

The Kuststigen hiking trail runs through Malö, Flatön, and Ängön. Initially, it follows the paved road across Malö, but shortly after Handelsman Flink on Flatön, it takes another route into lush areas that cannot be seen from the road. A map is available at the Bua/Svarteskär intersection, in the middle of Flatön.

Experience more

Just northwest of Ängön lies Skaftölandet, at the outer edge of the coastal strip. There you will find three picturesque fishing villages: Fiskebäckskil, Grundsund, and Rågårdsvik. They are well worth a visit, partly for the breathtaking views and partly for all the restaurants.

Malö is an island that makes many tourists feel at home, bringing them back year after year. Many who initially were only summer residents have now become permanent residents of Malö.

Kayaks on a trip from Malö

Kayak trip

Malö Camping is an excellent home base for a kayaking trip, giving you the freedom to choose whether you want to paddle across open water or within more sheltered areas with calmer seas—perfect for both the experienced kayaker and those who prefer to stay close to shore in shallow water. Adventurous or seasoned paddlers would do well to head west of Malö, where southern Skaftö is followed by Islandsberg and northern Härmanö. Beyond that lies the Skagerrak, wide open for exploration. Those who prefer a gentler pace or want to be close to their chilled rosé bottle in the afternoon sun can head north, to the scenic and tranquil Nordströmmarna, which opens into Koljöfjorden via Bassholmen. Kayaks are best rented from us.

Restaurants

On our neighboring island, Flatön, you’ll find the venerable Handelsman Flink. Their menu ranges from classic fish soup to a hearty hamburger—delicious is the word. From the outdoor seating area, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the boat traffic across Malö Strömmar.

Restaurant Brygghuset in Fiskebäckskil serves a lunch that’s nothing short of remarkable. Their à la carte menu offers several options from both sea and land, and there is also a generous herring buffet that’s truly out of the ordinary. You’ll find various homemade pickled-herring mixes, “matjessill” pie, “gubbröra,” and an extremely tasty gravlax—all spread out on the buffet table. Because the restaurant is popular and the concept well-loved, expect that there might be a queue during peak season, but we promise it’s well worth the wait.

Shopping

In Ellös, barely 3 km from Malö, you will find a Hemköp grocery store, a bakery, a pizzeria, and betting shops that serve as agents for both ATG and Svenska Spel.

In Henån, about 10 km from Malö, in addition to the aforementioned amenities in Ellös, there is also a Systembolaget (state liquor store), a bookstore, an ICA Supermarket, various lunch spots, as well as several boat companies offering both motorboats and sailboats for sale.

Göksäter, located in the middle of Orust, is an 8,000 m² discount store that is very frequently visited by both locals from Orust and customers from farther away. Initially, it was just a small grocery shop, but it has now become something of a miniature version of Ullared.

Next to the highway exit at Uddevalla is the Torp shopping center. It features both unique small boutiques and more well-known retail chains. A few years ago, the eastern section of Torp was completed, where you’ll find, among other stores, IKEA.
